Hands-on training to prepare you for your new career!

Apprenticeship is the training period that all newly certified coders must complete in order to prove they learned the skills they need to be career ready. This 2-year period helps AAPC certified coders stand out in the revenue cycle industry as having achieved a high level of knowledge and skill. AAPC requires every newly coder to complete the apprenticeship to drop the -A designation from their credential, but there are a few options to complete the apprenticeship that range from a few months to 2-3 years.

The quickest way to complete your apprenticeship is to complete an AAPC recognized training course (like the ones provided by A+ Revenue Cycle Training) and the Practicode 2.0 training program, which will each qualify for 1 year of training. Those who learn quickly can complete this option in 18 months or less and remove their -A with no additional employment requirements.

The slowest option is to gain 2 years of full-time employment experience with daily use of coding knowledge. Your employer will need to provide you with a signed and dated letter attesting to your employment history with them and your daily tasks.

You may also combine options to fit your schedule and budget; for example, you may complete an A+ Revenue Cycle Training course, which qualifies for 1 year of the requirement, and gain 1 year of full-time employment experience or 2 years of part-time employment.

Apprenticeship is a vital part of the CPC® credential. Though it may feel daunting now, you’ll soon find that this period only helps you grow as a medical coder!
